Public Transportation 65% open

Rio de Janeiro

What data is expected?

Information on public transport schedule, itineraries, stations/stops and bike lanes, for the entire city. Itineraries, stops/stations and schedule should be presented for every transportation mode (bus, subway, tramway, etc) and for every line and stop/station.

  • Stop/stations for every transportation mode
  • Line schedule for every stop/station
  • Itineraries for every line of every public transportation mode
  • Bike Lanes mapping for the entire city
  • Data should show connections between different types of transport

How open is the data?

Question Answer Comment
Available in bulk No Each information is provided separately, not only between transportation modes but also the type of information (itineraries separated from schedules separated from stations, etc).
In an open format CSV, DBF, GeoJSON, KML, SHP, SHX GeoJSON files can be downloaded through the “API” link. Shapefile extensions are also available in .CPG and .PRJ. Spreadsheet comes directly in .CSV.
Available free of charge Yes
Up-to-date No In general, data had the last update 2 months ago. Some of them had the last update in 2014. An evident missing update was for Subway stations and itineraries, that still didn’t provide data on the new line (Line 4) built in 2016.
Available free online Yes

findable 2 Data was scattered in many different maps and datasets through various websites, even though the majority of them was at “Portal Georio”, from IPP. It took me some time to realize that I had to click on the search button without a query in order to get the full list of datasets and then search for the transportation datasets. A specialist in the area helped me finding it and checking if the datasets contained what I was looking for.
findable_steps 1) I looked first at the “data storage” portal from IPP (, but I could only find digital maps that were not downloadable. 2) I consulted with a specialist for help and I finally came to “portal geo-rio” (, which is a open geodata portal maintained by IPP. 3) I had to click on the search button without a query in order to get the full list of datasets and then search for the datasets I was looking for. 4) I checked with the specialist if it had the information needed.

usability 2 There are many formats in which data are available, but you should have some knowledge on geographic datasets in order to work with this (including knowledge in geographic softwares). I would also add the fact that data is scattered between many different sources, which makes it harder to work on data.
collector_name IPP - Instituto Pereira Passos The Pereira Passos Institute (IPP) is the research department for Rio de Janeiro's City Government, responsible for collecting data, strategic planning and public policies integration, mapping, cartographic production and geotechnology application.
characteristics Stop/stations for every transportation mode, Itineraries for every line of every public transportation mode, Bike Lanes mapping for the entire city Data on stops/stations and itineraries for every transportation mode and the bike lanes for the entire city were available in the links provided. Schedules were only explicitly available for Ferry Boats. Buses had GPS real-time location data, which might be understood as a substitute for schedules. But all the other transportation modes had no data on schedules. Moreover, I couldn’t find explicit data on connections.

Schedule information was only available explicitly for ferry boats. For buses, information on GPS real-time location was provided, but not a schedule. For Subway, VLT, BRT and Train, only itineraries and stations were found. Data is incomplete for Subway (the new Line 4 is missing).

Reviewed. Everything ok.
